What services does Halton offer to ESL students?
Halton integrates ESL students into their home schools until the end of Grade 8. At that point, the family can decide whether or not they wish the student to attend a high school with ESL programming. A student in grades 1 through 8 will receive ESL support through either a stationary or itinerant ESL teacher.
How are ESL students assessed and evaluated?
ESL students in Halton are assessed using STEP (Steps to English Proficiency) to determine their level of language acquisition. Each ESL student will be assigned a STEP from 1-6 in the areas of Oral Language (Listening & Speaking), Reading, and Writing. Typically, an ESL teacher will provide direct weekly support to students in STEPS 1-3.
