Welcome Teachers...
I have an ESL student in my class! Where do I start?
First, be happy! Having a student with a rich cultural and linguistic background in your class is a fantastic opportunity to enrich the understanding of all students. Second, read the information in this website. Be sure to follow the links and check out related documents and information. Third, breathe deeply and try not to be overwhelmed by all of this information. Classrooms are becoming increasingly diverse and nobody can implement everything - just take what you can and approach one day at a time.
How are ESL students tracked? What is an OLB and why does it matter to me?
ESL students in Halton are assessed using STEP (Steps to English Proficiency) to determine their level of language acquisition. Each ESL student will be assigned a STEP from 1-6 in the areas of Oral Language (Listening & Speaking), Reading, and Writing. The tracker used to assign a STEP is called the OLB - Observable Language Behaviours. Classroom teachers are asked to update OLB's for their language learners several times a year. Where possible, this is done in conjuction with the ESL teacher...but in some cases may fall solely on the classroom teacher as the ESL teacher may not work directly with that student. Note: typically, an ESL teacher will provide direct support to students in STEPS 1-3.
